On Wednesday, September 29, at 6:00 PM immigrant New Yorkers and allies, will host a vigil in front of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s Brooklyn home. As the process to pass an inclusive federal budget package moves forward, it is imperative that Senator Schumer and Democratic leaders hold the line and deliver long-awaited immigration relief to millions across the country.
Surrounded by candles and flowers at the vigil, essential workers, DACA and TPS recipients will share their stories on the urgent need for Congress to ensure a pathway to citizenship for millions is included in the budget reconciliation package this year.Last month, under Senator Schumer’s leadership, the Senate approved a budget resolution, which includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
Community members will call on Senator Schumer to deliver on his promises to advance and include a path to citizenship in the final budget.
For decades, immigrants have relentlessly organized and fought for permanent protections that will allow them to remain together with their loved ones and continue to live in the country they now consider their home. Immigrants have been part of the backbone of the U.S economy, and throughout the pandemic worked in essential industries to keep communities safe—it is critical that they are part of the recovery of the country.
The historic budget package would help create a pathway to citizenship to over 463,000 immigrant New Yorkers, while boosting the U.S. economy.
