U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ New York asylum office will begin a phased reopening. On June 15th New York asylum will conduct in-person interviews for the first time since USCIS temporarily suspended in-person services nationwide to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The Newark asylum office remains closed due to unresolved facility issues unrelated to COVID-19.
The New York asylum office will automatically reschedule asylum interviews that were postponed during the temporary closure. When USCIS reschedules the interview, asylum applicants will receive a new interview notice with the new time and date for the interview and information about safety precautions that visitors to USCIS facilities.
Individuals must have no COVID-19 symptoms, no contact with anyone with a positive diagnosis, and no instructions from doctors or public health officials to self-quarantine. If any individual is unable to come for their interview, they will be rescheduled for a later date.
While the Newark Asylum office is not yet open to the public, all employees are working – either in the office or teleworking – on adjudicating cases or conducting telephonic interviews when possible. USCIS is actively looking for alternative venues to safely conduct in-person interviews until the Newark office facility issues are resolved.
