U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ New York and Newark offices have started a phased reopening are resuming naturalization ceremonies. USCIS’ top priority is to naturalize those who were scheduled to be sworn in as new citizens during the time it temporarily suspended in-person services to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
The number of people naturalized at any given time will be reduced to ensure social distancing, allow time for cleaning and minimize waiting room occupancy in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines. All necessary measures will be taken to protect USCIS’ workforce, applicants and the public. Ceremonies will resume in the Newark office on Friday, June 12 and in the New York offices on Monday, June 15.
Individuals must have no COVID-19 symptoms, no contact with anyone with a positive diagnosis, and no instructions from doctors or public health officials to self-quarantine. If any individual is unable to participate in a ceremony, they will be rescheduled for a later date. Naturalization ceremony notices will contain information on safety precautions that visitors to USCIS facilities must follow.
Throughout the temporary office closures, USCIS has continued to adjudicate cases, accept online applications, and provide emergency services on an as-needed basis. The New York and Newark offices will not yet be open for interviews or other services, but emergency services may be available only to those who submit a request by calling the USCIS contact center at 1-800-573-0866.
USCIS’ 88 domestic field offices are operating in accordance with local guidelines. Application Support Centers have not yet resumed in-person services.
