There is no need to say that Governor Andrew Cuomo is not only seen and known as the Governor of New York; instead, he is being looked upon as a trusted face in handling the scariest effect of the coronavirus pandemic. By delivering factual information to the public, even when it is not a piece of pleasant info., he is easing the anxiety of the general public. At the same time, he is doing whatever in his power to defend and help people affected or impacted by the pandemic.
It has been mentioned by everyone who is closely watching the unfolding of this crisis that the daily press conference of Governor Cuomo has been taken by many as one of the popular shows that people are keeping in their must-watch list. It is a fact that a great leader emerges through his or actions during the critical time. So as of now, it won’t be exaggerating to say that Andrew Cuomo is rising as that great leader of the United States. There is a lot to learn from him when it comes to leading during the crisis and handling the situation with calmness.
As everyone knows, his brother journalist Chris Cuomo has been infected by this deadly virus, but that hasn’t weakened or distracted the Governor even though it is well known that he loves his brother very much. By putting his pain and sorrow aside, he is fulfilling his duty, and when doing so, he is letting the world watch what it means to be a patriot and a courageous person. The role he had played during this time will secure the best place for him in history, not only the history of New York but also the history of America and beyond, but that doesn’t and shouldn’t mean that there isn’t anything more that he shouldn’t do. Despite all appreciative things he has done and all possible protective measures he is taking, there are still things that he should consider doing.
Its statistical facts that social distancing has significantly contributed to reducing the spread and that has helped in saving more lives, which otherwise would have lost. It is also obvious that social distancing will continuously improve to reduce the spread and save lives. Still, critical questions are how long social distancing practice can can continue similarly. It is not feasible and sensible to keep a similar way of social distancing for a long time. There must be some significant measures that should be taken to bring life to be reasonable and save lives at the same time.
Yes, there are different levels of governing bodies in America, and they all have a significant role in regards to who does what but at the midst of Coronavirus crisis it’s been very clear someone must take the role of coordinator while coordinating the work of all level of government; federal to local. And at present, in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo is being that coordinator and coordinating the effort of all levels of government. So, as Governor Cuomo is taking the lead, there is no one else to expect to take extra possible measures. So, with that being said, it must not be too much to expect from him to consider doing the following things:
1. As rapid testing is being taken place, more and more people are being identified as COVID 19 positive, and most of them are requested to stay home, which is practical but only on places where people have their own house with places for them to stay alone. However, that’s not the case for many New Yorkers since most of them have no choice but to share apartments to be able to pay the expensive rent. It will be in the best interest to make arrangements for people who are tested positive to remain away from their shared apartments so that way others in that apartment, as well as people living on that building, won’t be vulnerable in getting infected. The Governor should find a possible temporary site to keep those individuals who have COVID 19 and residing in shared apartments.
2. Even when there is social distancing rules is in effect, people that work for identified businesses as essential service are still going to work. Yes, by continuously working, these people are helping everyone by providing food, medicines as well as other necessary services. Still, if we look at it in-depth, those who are working on essential services except medical facilities are the people who are working with the lowest possible pay. In other words, these are the people who have no choice but to work and most of them are immigrants and some are even undocumented. As they have no opportunity but to work at all times, it might be possible that they might have been working by hiding their pain and suffering, which possibly could have been a symptom of COVID 19. So, if the government won’t assure those unfortunate workers who are working on shadow and fear of losing their living or being punished for not having legal papers that these they will not face any consequences and won’t be deprived for food and shelter just being honest of their health condition the spreading will continue and might never be stopped. The Governor must take actions to assure those unfortunate workforces who are working on fear by assuring that their help and support and honesty will be rewarded not punished.
3. Yes, the essential service-related companies must be functioning at all times, but that should only be performed with healthy staffs. With that being said, the testing for the coronavirus must be done in all workers who are working day in and day out in providing required essential services to too many who are either staying home or working to save lives of too many others. In order to make sure that the workers who are working for essential services are healthy, the government must act to have a testing kit available for workplaces that have no choice of remaining open.
There are too many other things that can be done to; minimize the spread of the coronavirus and to bring life to be normal, which hopefully will be done in days to come. Yet, the three things mentioned above, if done, will play a very supportive role in doing what is needed the most in the midst of coronavirus crisis in New York. And once again the hope of these expectations will be fulfilled from no one else but Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is considered as the Governor of America even though he is only the Governor of New York.
