NJ main asylum office will relocate to Newark, satellite office to open in Manhattan

The Newark Asylum Office is making two moves in the next year in order to accommodate an expanded workforce, increase efficiency, and provide convenient access for asylum applicants.
The main asylum office, currently located in Lyndhurst, will be relocating to Newark to an existing space at 100 Mulberry Street. The Newark office will also open a satellite location in lower Manhattan at the federal building at 201 Varick Street. The moves are expected to be completed late in FY2020 or early 2021.
The expansions are necessary to accommodate the increase in asylum officer staffing to address the asylum application backlog. With these moves, there will be additional space for more officers to conduct more interviews.
Currently the Newark Office adjudicates affirmative asylum cases, Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) cases, and conducts credible and reasonable fear screenings and Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) determinations. The workload at each office will be determined by agency needs at the time and is expected to shift according to current needs and priorities, as is standard practice across all asylum offices.
USCIS will keep applicants and the public notified as it determines which caseloads will be assigned to each space.
